Australian gold coins "Lunar" is a series of bullion and collectible coins, started in 1996. The theme of the collection is the Chineese Lunar calendar. The image on the reverse depicts an animal which is the patron of the year.
The first series of Australian Lunars had been produced from 1996 to 2007. The coins were so popular that the Perth Mint began to mint a second series in 2008, which was in great demand too. From 2020, the release of the third series began.
The 2014 "Year of the Horse" Series II "Lunar" coin has a different design. The new coin shows a graceful horse galloping along mountain meandering roads surrounded by wind and clouds. Traditionally, people born in a year horses are endowed with incredible endurance and do not stop on the way to achieving their goal.
At the bottom of the reverse the text "Year of the Horse" is minted and on the left there is the Chinese character and the letter P (for the Perth Mint). The obverse depicts a portrait of her Majesty Elizabeth II and face value of 100 Australian dollars.
The Lunar coin is made of 0.9999 gold, has a weight of 1 troy ounce (31,1 grams), produced in "Proof high relief" quality.
